This seal was crafted in 1450 upon the bestowal of a posthumous title on King Sejong when he passed away and his son, King Munjong (r. 1450-1452) acceded to the throne. King Sejong was born in 1397 as the third son of King Taejong (r. 1400-1418) and Queen Wongyeong (1365-1420). As his older brother Yangnyeong was deposed from the position of crown prince in 1418, he was invested as the new crown prince and succeeded his father in the same year. The Seal is engraved with a 12-Chinese character title which reads, “英文睿武 仁聖明孝 大王之寶” (‘Yeongmunyemu Inseongmyeonghyo Daewangjibo’ meaning “a seal of the great king who is intelligent, exceptional in learning, wise, mighty, benevolent, sacred, brilliant, and devoted”). A shrine title “Sejong” was also conferred to him then, which wasn’t inscribed on the seal. This is the second oldest of the extant royal seals of Joseon.
