This is one of the 10 national seals made upon the foundation of the Korean Empire in 1897. Emperor Gojong (r. 1897-1907) used this seal for diverse state administrative affairs including the appointment of government officials, awarding the order of merit, and imperial court rituals. The seal was finally returned to Korea in 2014 sixty years after having been taken out of the country.
